The Trinity River is the home of some of the best Fly Fishing in Northern California. The Trinity River is west of Redding and flows straight from the Trinity Alps to the Pacific Ocean. It goes through a series of 2 reservoirs, Trinity Dam and Lewiston Dam. From there starts the main stem of the Trinity River. This water system is a place you can find yourself and the fish. Greg Hector of Hookem Heckys Guide Service refers to this river as "The Serenity of the Trinity." Greg enjoys fly fishing the Trinity River throughout the year.

The Fall Run Steelhead on the Trinity River is also a very popular fishing time of the year. Many people make the trip to the Trinity River to catch large fish using a variety of fishing techniques including fly fishing and spin casting. The easy accesibility of the River from Highway 299W make this river perfect for day long fishing trips.

There are very few things finer in life than spending a day on the Trinity River Fly Fishing

Fly Fishing On the Trinity River

June kicks off salmon season. Escape the heat of the valley - Trinity River temperature averages about 5 to 10 degrees cooler. On the Trinity River these summer run fish come up very bright and are extremely aggressive. Salmon run through August. The average fish runs 6-10 pounds, with a big fish in the 20 to 30 pound range. August through November is when the fall run starts. The fall run fish are even larger than the early season fish.

For these majestic fish we will use artificial reaction baits, egg patterns and roe (fly fishing; streamers and egg patterns). Greg prefers artificial offerings (lures, spinners, flies) over natural bait. These salmon trips can be a combination of spin fishing and fly fishing techniques.

September through March is Steelhead time. Some of the best Steelhead Techniques used are fly fishing and spin fishing: back bouncing, pulling plugs, side drifting. The average fish weighs in from 4 to 7 pounds, with a good fish over the 10 pound mark. During these months Greg will carry fly or spin gear or in combination - your choice.

Permitted by the Bureau of Land Management and Forest Service to operate on the Trinity River offering guided fishing trips.
